  • About The Role

  • The Conflict & Stabilisation (C&S) Practice Associate will spend approximately 50% of their time supporting the overall day to day functioning of the technical practice in direct support to and under the supervision of the Senior Technical Specialist and Practice Lead. The remaining 50% of their time will be spent providing project support to one of, or a combination of, the C&S practice project portfolio (subject to evolving project needs).  

    The Associate will support both technical programme delivery and new business requirements, as well as thought leadership and outreach initiatives.  The Associate will also contribute to the management of knowledge, learning and information that is gained through our programmes to support our learning processes. The Associate will be expected to coordinate with other technical practices, project teams and other functions within both Chemonics UK, Chemonics Europe and Chemonics International.

     Main Responsibilities:

     General Practice and Project Support

     Practice

    • Contributes to development, implementation and coordination of the C&S practice workplan in line with Chemonics UK’s overall objectives.
    • Organises regular C&S practice meetings, workshops and engagements, including scheduling, planning the agenda and notetaking for the monthly meeting and regular strategy sessions/workshops.
    • Coordinates with project teams to gather and share knowledge.
    • Supports the Senior Technical Specialist and Practice Lead in engaging with clients, partners, consultants, and other relevant stakeholders, including at Early Market Engagement events. Assists with scheduling meetings and notetaking.
    • Attends and provides notes and/or briefings from relevant external engagement events (online and in-person).
    • Conducts online desk research into relevant contextual developments, client preferences, new clients, and opportunities, to inform practice strategy and upstream positioning efforts. Summarises research findings in concise reports or presentations.
    • Supports the Senior Technical Specialist and Practice Lead in the production of written/visual outreach materials and/or proposal/concept note documents, as required.
    • Organises practice folders and files and helps to maintain high knowledge management and information sharing standards across the practice.
    • Provides support to, or works in coordination with the communications team, to plan and deliver C&S outreach and thought leadership events.
    • Supports framework management, for the UK Integrated Security Fund and relevant lots on the UK Global Development Delivery Framework (and any relevant new frameworks), including portal monitoring and communication, partner outreach, information sharing and coordination meetings, in coordination with the New Business team.
    • Assists Senior Technical Specialist in planning and delivering learning and development initiatives for the wider practice.
    • Assist in promoting knowledge and awareness of Chemonics UK’s C&S practice internally and externally

    Project – Exact tasks will vary based on the needs of each project but may include:

    • Supports project administration, contract and consultant management, logistical arrangements, financial management and operations in line with the project workplan and agreed upon taskings
    • Organises regular project meetings, workshops and engagements, including scheduling, planning the agenda and notetaking
    • Provides technical and/or monitoring, evaluation and learning support, where requested, including drafting, reviewing and editing reports and project deliverables
    • Interacts with the project team, client and stakeholders as necessary
     Project and Practice
    • Attends training courses (where available) to increase knowledge and skills in relevant technical or project management areas, e.g. conflict analysis/conflict sensitivity, or agile project management
    • Proof reads and edits documents, as requested by the Senior Technical Specialist or Project Manager.
    • Other reasonable and relevant ad hoc tasks in support of the practice, or practice programmes, as required and agreed with the Senior Technical Specialist.

    C&S New Business Support

    • Supports new business development for UK-based, and other donor programming by providing research, coordination, or administrative support.
    • Undertakes direct line roles for capture and proposal development efforts, for C&S opportunities in fragile and conflict affected regions. Roles may include but are not limited to CV writer, section writer, coordinator, researcher, subcontractor/partner liaison.

    Note: Working on non-C&S NB or projects is possible, only when urgent needs arise in other practices and supervisor approval is granted.

    Person Specification:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below are representative of the required knowledge, skills, and/or abilities needed to perform the principal duties.

    Essential Skills:

    • Degree in relevant subject (e.g. international development, conflict studies, politics, international relations, or similar) or equivalent work experience required; Advanced degree preferred
    • Relevant professional work experience, experience with donor funded programming, knowledge of FCDO preferences and ways of working
    • Proven interest in and understanding of conflict themes, international development programming and current conflict contexts
    • Proven ability to conduct independent research and knowledge of mixed research methodologies preferred
    • Experience supporting project management tasks and understanding of monitoring, evaluation and learning
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Proven ability to write clearly and concisely in English to set deadlines
    • Willingness to travel and work abroad for some periods, including in fragile and conflict environments; experience living or working in developing countries an advantage
    • Strong analytical skills and ability to be proactive and take initiative
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
    • Ability to manage numerous competing priorities and meet agreed deadlines
    • Foreign language proficiency in a region in which we operate desirable
    • UK work authorization required or ability to obtain it
